Nurse Practitioners

Susanne Packham (f)

Susanne is a qualified nurse who has had substantial additional training in order to work at an advanced level referred to as an Advanced Nurse Practitioner (ANP). The expertise of the ANP in primary care (e.g. GP practice) lies in our ability to operate as generalists. The ANP provides complete episodes or care and with a wide variety and range of presenting problems and health care needs. This encompasses the provision of evidence  based, high-quality care for patients whose issues fall within: urgent/acute episodes, long-term/chronic conditions, health promotion and public health. (RCN, 2012)

We work closely with the other members of the primary care team with includes the GPs, practice nurses, pharmacist and midwife.

Examples of problems you can see Susanne for include:

  • Minor illness - e.g. coughs/colds, rashes/diarrhoea & vomiting/urinary problems/flu/stomach pain/piles/back pain etc.
  • Chronic illness - problems with your asthma/COPD, chronic lung problem/high block pressure, cholesterol/diabetes.
  • Contraception - problems or concerns/questions about your pills, coil, emergency contraception.
  • Women's health - vaginal discharge/pelvic pain/abnormal vaginal bleeding/heavy periods.
  • Medication concerns - Susanne is a prescriber and you may contact her with any concerns or questions about your medication. Our practice Pharmacist can also see you for this reason.

In recent years, the role of nurses in general practice has expanded, and the illnesses and conditions that they can deal with has increased. Our Practice Nurses undertake consultations for all immunisations including childhood, travel, flu and tetanus; cervical screening; family planning/health promotion, smoking cessation and education; removal of stitches, dressings; blood tests, ECGs (electrocardiograms); blood pressure tests; ear syringing; elderly health and new patient checks. They also carry out follow-up reviews for asthma, spirometry, high blood pressure, epilepsy, diabetes and coronary heart disease. If you are unsure whether you need to see a nurse or doctor, ask a receptionist who will make an appropriate appointment for you.
